5. Ask Molly – What is being a PowerSeller really worth?
Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of The eBay UK Bulletin.
Sales are up at HQ and the free gift offer is pulling them in, well a few anyway. The big surprise has been my ‘loss leader’ auctions which were intended only as a draw into the shop – they are actually making me some decent returns and they’re fun to watch as well.
Quite a few questions this week including how to switch back to a private account.
Also included, the touchy subject of soliciting feedback.
[For details of this newsletter, please scroll down to the end.]
1. EBAY NEWS – BUSINESS POLICIES
This interesting piece of news was announced at the same time as the recent changes to discount levels and did get overlooked by many.
It could save time especially if you have listings with different postage, returns or payment conditions. I imagine it will be something akin to creating different postage rules for items in ‘multi-variation’ listings, which I do use.
There’s nothing to do at the moment, but you will be invited to opt in from May onwards. Your various polices will be managed from a central point but can be changed on a per listing basis.
“These custom settings are called ‘business policies’ and they’ll save you time when creating and updating listings. Business policies can be assigned to multiple listings so, for example, if you choose to change your postage details for certain listings, you can simply update the relevant postage policy and all listings using that policy will automatically update.”

Sounds good, I wait with bated breath.

2. PRODDING BUYERS
As a seller, do you think you should send a polite message requesting feedback for items? If so, how long should you wait?
I’m new to eBay, started selling in December; I’ve sold 14 items but have just 7 feedbacks. Getting to ten seems like climbing a mountain! Prodding people seems tempting.”
It is a tricky thing, not something I do myself, as it could result in the wrong kind of feedback!
It is possible to automate the process using the ‘Manage Communication with buyers’ link under the main ‘Account’ tab in myeBay.
If you are sure that the items were as the buyer would have expected without question then I would ask them for feedback.
3. FROM BUSINESS TO PRIVATE
“Some time ago, my wife sold a lot of items through eBay and they forced her to upgrade from private to business seller.
At the moment the only things that she sells is stuff that we have owned ourselves and that we want to get rid of.
How do we get eBay to change my wife’s eBay account back to being a personal and non-business one?”
I couldn’t find a direct link anywhere, so the solution is a bit ’round the houses’; Click on the help menu (top right); type in ‘business account’ and then click search; on the right of the page click ‘Registering as a Business’; scroll down this page a bit and click ‘change your account type’, finally click the ‘Private Account’ option.
A bit long winded, but should work OK.
If anybody knows of a direct link, please let me know – Mollybol@ebaybulletin.co.uk
4. LOGO HELP NEEDED
I need to update my Logo. I have the outlines of a design but it’s extremely basic. I can’t use it, due to size, to upload on to a business card order from VistaPrint, or use it for the design of brochures, flyers, etc.
Can any of your readers do this for me? I just don’t have the artistic IT know-how.
Might even be better for someone to start from scratch, using what’s on my eBay Shop pages.”

All a bit beyond me but if anybody can help, please contact ‘Theshinystar’ directly.
5. ASK MOLLY – WHAT IS BEING A POWER SELLER REALLY WORTH?
On checking my sellers’ dashboard I find that I am now a Silver PowerSeller! Whooppee!
Can you tell me if there any discount in reaching Silver status?”
‘Pennyyork’ – http://stores.ebay.co.uk/pennyyork
First of all, congratulations on getting to this level, no mean feat in these tricky times.
Alas being a PowerSeller now has little value, but it is a stepping stone to discounts; you need to be a ‘Top Rated seller’ as well.
Getting the TRS badge will earn you 20% for a few weeks and it then drops to 10% under the ‘Spring review’. It is still worth having for buyer confidence and enhanced search positioning.
Something on your ‘seller dashboard’ is pulling down your stats; the most common problem seems to be postage charges. Check what the problem is and then focus in on improving your score.
If you have a question about eBay or home working in general, please send it to: email@example.com – I will reply personally to every e-mail I receive and remember, there are FREE copies of my book available for the best questions, tips, or stories.
– END NOTE –
That’s all for this week. Check out www.ebaybulletin.co.uk for the latest news from Molly HQ.
Not a bad start to the boot-sale season given the uncertain weather forecast.
Purchases included a box of Warhammer for £8, now listed for £80, Duplo bricks, Knex, Star Wars Lego, and a brand new electric shower for £7, offers around £80 would be nice.
You can follow up on my weekly bargains via the new shop – http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Through-the-Square-Window
I should be able to get the rest listed soon, there just never seems to be enough time!
Best wishes and happy eBaying
