Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of The eBay UK Bulletin.
HNY to all bulletin readers. So that was the Christmas break then, over for another year. All that remains now is to shift anything left in the shed at knockdown prices to keep some cash flowing.
Christmas Day was a busy time at HQ with hardly any packing being completed, although a few interesting sales were made including: a washing machine, two Pentax cameras, a vintage adding machine, a 6 Amp MCB (fuse) and a Lego bat. Party games at HQ are a little different, with all the Elves sitting in a circle and when the music stops they wrap up the parcel.
In this week’s bulletin, a timely warning about the global shipping programme and a couple of spoofs to kick-start the year.

1. EBAY NEWS – THE NEW VAT RULES
January 1st saw the legislation change for electronic services which may have an impact on your eBay bill.
Private sellers will now be charged VAT at the rate of the country where you’re based (for example 20% for the UK) rather than the rate of the country where eBay is based (15% for Luxembourg up until 31 December).
The situation regarding business sellers is a little more odd and you may see this if you check some of your fees charged on items sold since Jan 1st against the same value item sold in December.
Businesses which are VAT registered will be the same, but businesses which are not VAT registered will see their FVFs fall. Total fees on a £10 item sold through my DIY / toy shop have fallen from 10% to 8.7%.
I wait with interest to see what happens when the invoice for January is produced.

2. GLOBAL SHIPPING – A WORD OF CAUTION
Your audience seems to include sellers in America so the following might be of interest to them:
Those in Europe know international shipping very well but here in the United States? Not so much. Our domestic market is large enough that I have only very rarely shipped internationally. My items are small enough that I use “free shipping” as an enticement so international shipping would break the bank – I always exclude every international location. Always, that is, except just once and it bit me.
I was helping my sister to sell something in a category I had never sold in before so I didn’t use “sell similar” from one of my existing items (dumb) and started afresh. What I didn’t notice was an already checked box for a brand new feature in eBay called the “Global Shipping Program”. This allows you to, “Send it to the US shipping center, and the rest will be taken care of for you.” Sounds great doesn’t it? I should have realized that nothing is free, especially when eBay is concerned.
Of course, I sold the item to an international buyer. We agreed to a price including shipping based on my estimation of international shipping. I merrily printed the shipping label within eBay only to notice it was going to somewhere in the US with an additional code in the address. Hmmmmm. THAT is when I saw the “Send it to the US shipping center, and the rest will be taken care of for you.” part. Too late to turn back now. What I REALLY didn’t understand is that eBay then charged the buyer an additional US$33. Boy, was he not happy. He thought I had upped the price on him or charged him twice. I showed him a snapshot in PayPal of what I had received (the agreed to amount) and mentioned that “The item has already shipped.” and “eBay may have added their international customs charges.”
The buyer has been quiet thus far so I hope I escaped unharmed from this transaction.”
Although a convert to the shipping program I am also having a few teething problems. I found it tricky to explain to a buyer in France why shipping costs would not increase if they bought two items, one via the shipping program and one directly from me. I can put them in the same box and they just pay the one shipping fee to eBay.
There are some limitations regarding weight and size but manage these and it can be a great way to increase sales.
The package must not weigh more than 30kgs.
The package must not exceed 125,000 cubic cm as measured by (length x width x height).
Any single dimension of a parcel must not exceed 120 cm.

3. A COUPLE OF PAYPAL SPOOFS
These two popped up over the holiday period, not the most imaginative spoofs but a couple more to include on the ‘shed wall of phishing’.

4. ASK MOLLY – CAN I REMOVE THE FEEDBACK?
One of my multi-variation listings was active and I could not check the available stock. One customer bought an item and paid. When i went to process packaging and postage, I found that I only had one item left in this particular colour and it had a manufacturing fault.
I cancelled the order with the message that I was unable to complete this order due to item having a manufacturing fault, so I choose to refund full payment to customer.
Customer gave me negative feedback and wrote that I cancelled the order only with a message that I could not fulfil order due to it being out of stock.
This affected my 100% positive feedback.
How can i amend it?”
Unfortunately unless the buyer agrees to amend the feedback it is unlikely that it can be removed.
When I run out of stock and cannot fulfil an order then I just mark it as sent and then refund when the buyer complains in a few days time. This is not really very ethical but it does reduce the chances of picking up a negative feedback. Although, saying that, I have been known to send a larger size tube instead (if I have one available) which heads off the poor feedback and keeps a happy customer. I also don’t feed the Elf in charge of inventory for a week as a punishment.
eBay do have a video on the subject of feedback revision. It is the second item down on the list with the small camera icon to the side. It might be worth a shot.
