Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of The eBay UK Bulletin.
It is a big day at HQ with all the Elves huddled around as Molly tries to compose the first bulletin live on the Harriman House blog site. No more scribbling a few notes on an email and sending it off to Craig over coffee. Now there are buttons everywhere! I am sure I could bring the whole thing crashing down.
In this hastily compiled bulletin there is some really boring stuff about VAT and a few pointers on how to setup your ‘about me’ page. It is well worth the heartache.

1. EBAY 101 – TURBO LISTING ON FREE WEEKENDS – UPDATE
I received several replies about the free listing Turbo Lister glitch and as I now have my private sales account up and running I have suddenly become very interested in free listing.
I find if I go onto my unsold list and tick all boxes of items I want to relist, I then click relist. The original questioner is right in that it comes up with the cost for listings but if you bear with it and click ok/submit to list them the cost is then corrected and comes up as £0.00.”

I did take onboard the replies that suggested what else could be done with Turbo Lister but perhaps this is not the forum to print them.
2. IMMINENT POSTAGE HIKE
Although not technically an eBay specific item, this is certainly an area which is of great concern to all sellers.
I am still picking my way through the implications of the impending Royal Mail price rises and also the new format changes for parcels. The one I bring to your attention today is the criteria for a small parcel – it has to be less than 8cm in depth. This is around the size of a perfume gift set so could be costly. If the length and width are 16cm or less then the depth can also be up to 16cm. Simple!
I think is is great that the Royal Mail call this Parcels made easy.
Get the measurements of your parcel wrong and the postage starts at £5.20 (2nd class up to 1kg) instead of £2.60. It looks as though the PPI rate for the same parcel will now be £2.25, up from £1.95. I am waiting for final confirmation on this, it should arrive by August.

3. BORING TAX STUFF
If you are not trading as a business on eBay I would skip over this section as it is not the most entertaining. [Ed - he said so himself.]
Spring. It is the season of year ends when all thoughts turn to book-keeping. When I was younger it was love, now the satisfaction of a gleaming set of accounts does it for me.
I had a note from a reader concerning VAT on purchases from high street shops and if this could be claimed back. Although I am a little rusty I have been doing a little homework recently (as mentioned last week) I have provided my ideas below, but I would welcome any thoughts on the subject from you out there.
The reader is VAT registered and part of the full blown VAT club. I am currently on the flat rate scheme and so cannot claim any input VAT, which is why I don’t have any personal knowledge on this matter. Purchases are made from the high street and the till receipts kept as proof of VAT paid. These are used to compile input VAT figures and I was asked if this is OK.
After a coffee or two I have determined that these receipts are not enough as a full VAT receipt is required detailing the amount paid and VAT rate in place. You can get these from any store although it might take a while to find somebody in Tesco who knows how to produce one.
Normal store receipts can only be used, I believe, at the very outset of the VAT journey when claiming back VAT already paid on stock in hand at the time of registration. The reason being that when these purchases were made you may not have realised that registration was coming and so did not obtain the full receipt.
That is the joy of the flat rate scheme. I just send 8% of all turnover to George, so no need for any paperwork or boring old receipts.

4. ASK MOLLY – HOW CAN I MAKE MY ‘ME’ PAGE LOOK GREAT?
My question is how to make my about me page more attractive to buyers, this leads me onto the selling page and its appearance. How would you advise a newcomer such as me to set about making these pages more attractive and welcoming?”

The ‘about me’ page can be a great selling tool, not enough sellers use it. Mine has just gone around the clock for a second time in nine years, with approx. 200,000 hits. It is easy to set up a Me page and with a little HTML it can be made more interesting.
I use the same designs on my listing pages, shop front, me page, Ts and Cs, and any other pages that I might use. This maintains a common theme throughout and allows me to alter the background, colours, border and so on according to the seasons. So that’s scary for Halloween, snow at Christmas, rabbits at easter, and so on. Having your own webspace allows you to make a few changes which will alter all listings in one go.
This time of year is a bit boring but if you check out a few of my pages you should see the same backgounds, etc. Does it really help sales? It is difficult to tell but I can use some secret noticebords hidden within the HTML of each listing page to promote special offers or advise of delays due to snow, or just have a dancing pixie. [Ed - eBayers like dancing pixies.]
The large banner at the top of each listing currently tells buyers that I send high-value items by courier; it is a clickable banner that currently goes to the shop. I can alter the landing page at will and run special offers advertised through the banner, which when clicked will take the buyer to the promotion page. At the moment turnover is fine so I don’t need this incentive.
The website I use is 50MB but any host should be OK. Basically you get a load of storage space and can build your own web pages or store pictures. Once created you can link to them from listings. Dumping all your Ts and Cs on another page frees up space in the listing and as sellers have very few rights anyway, why clog up selling space with them? I can push visitors to my ‘Me’ page off to the ebaybulletin website and from there all over the place. Quite a few links go back to Amazon, where hopefully a few books are sold.
There are loads of great templates on the web for use on eBay. When I started there were not many about and the book I read on HTML was three inches thick. It is just a case of checking them out and playing around until you get the look you want.
